BBC Television Service 1953-1962

Welcome to our section about the presentation on the BBC Television Service between 1953 and 1962

This would be a time of change for broadcasting in the UK and there was felt a need to have a change on the service. In 1955 the BBC would loose its TV monopoly when Independent Television transmissions would start although initially these would only be in the London region and would take a little time to develop.

The BBC crest was moved aside for an ident called Bats Wings which also had a clock with the same details on it. The Bats Wings clock was not always used, an instance of this was news programmes which had a different clock. The design was created by Abram Games who had also created the emblem for the Festival of Britain

The offical description for the ident is as follows:

"An abstract patten consisting of two intersecting eyes which scan the globe from North to South and East to West symbolising vision and the power of cision. Flashes of lightning on either side represent electrical forces and the whoel form takes the shape of wings which suggest the creative possibiites of television"

BATS WINGS IDENT - 1953

This is a rare item, it is a BBC press release discussing the introduction of the new ident for the BBC Television Service. This would replace the crest on screen except of issues of national importance. This item is held by us as part of our archives
