  • Sky One was an entertainment channel containing a mixture of original British Programming such as The Russell Howard Hour, Time Gentlemen Please and Trollied alongside a large number of American programmes such as Bones, Modern Family and hit show The Simpsons.

  • Sky One started out as Europe's first Cable and Satellite channel called Satellite Television Limited before becoming Sky Channel which was broadcast across many European counties.

  • Sky One would be the replacement to Sky Channel and launched on the 31st July 1989 and was only available in the UK and Ireland unlike its predecessor.Early programmes included Alf and the new drama 21 Jump Street along with some American soaps and action shows. Australian shows suchh as Skippy the Bush Kangaroo would also feature. In November the folllowing year parent company Sky merged with their rival British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB), this resulted in the closure of BSB's general entertainment channel Galaxy. Galaxy's closure meant an increase of the programming available to Sky One including hits like Hill Street Blues, The Adams Family and Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles. American miniseries would also feature heavily in the schedules.

 

  • Later hits for the channel would include showing Star Trek during weekday evenings along with Next Generation Lost in Space and Battlestar Galactica.

  • On the 1st September 1993 Sky One became part of rthe Sky Multichannels subscription package and was encrypted.

  •  In October 1998 it was launched on Sky Digital, the channel remained on Sky Analogue until the 27th September the following year making it on of the last remaning channels on analogue.

  • In 2003 the channel started broadcasting in widescreen witrh the exception of the adverts. The adverts remained in standard definition as they were all coming from the same  servers as other Sky channels which had not yet made the leap to widescreen.

  • On New Years Day 2014 the channel renamed itself for the day as Sky Onesie encouraging people to relax in front of the box in their onesie to recover from partying hard the previous night.

  • From 2017 the channel also feaured sport showing some of Soccer Saturday along with some Formula One and World Cup Cricket highlights.

Sky One closed down on the 1st Setember 2021 to be replaced by a channel highlighing the content on its other channels called Sky Showcase and its content moving to new channel Sky Max.
