Desmond's was a sitcom based in a barber's shop in the London borough of Peckham. Desmond Ambrose came over from the West Indies in the 1960s with his wife Shirley to start a new life here in the UK where he set up his barber shop. The shop seems to end up being a bit of a drop in centre with Desmond's friends Pork Pie and mature student Matthew who would hang out there but would disappear whenever it is mentioned that Desmond would cut their hair for them. Matthew was not from the West Indies like Desmond and Pork Pie but from Africa and there was a rivaly between them with Matthew often comenting on there being an old African saying. Desmond and Shirley live above the shop with two of their children, Gloria and Sean. They have an older son called Michael who was a bank manager, he had a share in the shop and was disapproving on the way things were run as he wanted to streamline.
