Drop the Dead Donkey was a comedy taking a topical view of the news, it did this by being the news itself. The programme was set in the newsroom and studios of the fictitious Globe Link News which was managed by Gus Hedges who was not a news man and was all about the ratings and pleasing the dodgy owner Sir Royston Merchant. The editor was a drip called George Dent who was often under the thumb of those in the newsroom and his wife, he also had long running issues with his daughter's behaviour.

The show was a mixture of drama from the newsroom between the members of staff along with topical jokes based on stories in the news that week.
