The Help Centre

Welcome to The Help Centre

Over the years we have been asked the odd question, or two, about broadcasting and our website. To make our viewers' lives' easier we have included this section of the most commonly asked questions.

The question you have always wanted to ask us (and some you may not have even thought of asking until now) may be below, if not details on how to ask your question are at the bottom of this section.

So on with the frequently asked questions...

DO YOU HAVE ANY PAID WORK GOING?

Unfortunately not, we are a humble hobby site and so do not have the resources to employ anyone.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PAID WORK GOING?

Unfortunately not, we are a humble hobby site and so do not have the resources to employ anyone.

CAN YOU PROVIDE ME WITH WORK EXPERIENCE?

Unfortunately not, we are a humble hobby site and so do not have the resources to provide work experience. Being a hobby site has meant that work is done around other tasks and when time allows so not always structured.

CAN I VISIT THE ARCHIVE IN PERSON?

At this present time unfortunately not, it is a hobby site with no dedicated facilities (unless I win the lotto and build a TV museum perhaps)

ARE YOU CONNECTED TO ANY PARTICULAR PRODUCTION COMPANY / BROADCASTER?

No, we are a hobby site and are not employed within the industry. For convenience we may provide details or a link to a particular broadcaster / production company but that should not be assumed to be a connection with them.

CAN YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A COPY OF A PROGRAMME FROM YOUR WEBSITE / ARCHIVES?

Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, we are unable to do this. Many programmes are available from Amazon or eBay, as well as independent and chain stores. Where possible, we will give details about the availability of a programme but unfortunately some have not been released commercially. The only real exception to this would be where a copyright holder needed a copy due to it being missing from their own archive, in these cases we are more than willing to help.

WHAT ITV REGION ARE YOU IN?

Wow ITV region that's a blast from the past. We are in what was the Yorkshire Television region. We were previously in the South and South East of England region (previously served by Meridian / TVS / Southern).

WHEN DID TELEVISION START IN THE UK?

The first regular transmissions were from the BBC and started on the 2nd November 1936, these were the first regular broadcasts in the world. For more information, check out the BBC History page. Commercial television started on the 22nd September 1955.

CAN THE BRITSET ARCHIVE BE VIEWED ON A TABLET / MOBILE?

Hopefully yes, we have worked hard to design our site so that it works in different devices, there may be some elements that do not work as well (it is very difficult to create something to work on the myriad of devices / platforms out there) so if you spot something which does not work quite right please get in touch with us

DO YOU LOAN OUT ITEMS FROM THE ARCHIVE?

For the most part, the answer is likely to be no, we are unable to loan out video footage etc. for copyright reasons and many of the other items in our archives would be very difficult and often impossible for us to replace, so we are unable to take the risk that an item may be lost or damaged.

We may on occasion loan items to registered organisations (museums etc.) and we would encourage them to get in touch with us to discuss their requirements and we will assist as much as we are able

CAN I CONTRIBUTE AN ITEM TO THE ARCHIVES?

Yes please, we are always on the lookout for items / objects / footage / videos / books / equipment / objects etc. to build the archives and we will certainly be very grateful for any contribution (and will acknowledge the contribution on the site).

For information about submitting items to the archive check out our Wanted - Submitting Material to the BritSet Archive section

Click here to visit our Wanted - Submitting Material to the BritSet Archive Section

Please note that as this is a hobby site and is done when I have time around my full time day job and my family it may take a bit of time before any submissions are shown on the site. If there is an extended delay (for example, we are building a new section to put it in) we will inform you.

We are unable to accept nitrate film footage due to the risks involved in handling such material.

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED TO CREATE THE BRITSET ARCHIVE WEBSITE?

In terms of computer hardware, we have a Dell server with 8GB RAM running Microsoft Windows 11. We also use a laptop for web design work

In terms of software we use Cyberlink Power Director 365 for the creation of the video clips and images, we also use Adobe Dreamweaver for designing the webpages and graphics work is done in Adobe Photoshop

WHAT EQUIPMENT IS USED TO TRANSFER CONTENT FROM SOURCE
