Red Dwarf is a space age comedy about a human called Dave Lister who ends up being the last human alive, this happened because he was put into stasis due to smuggling a cat onboard his workplace the JMC vessel Red Dwarf. Shortly after going into stasis the rest of the crew is wiped out because of a radiation leak leaving just him. Released after three million years he is released unaware of what has happened and all alone, except he has company in the form of his former superior Arnold Rimmer who was bought back as a hologram mush to Loster's fustratiopn. Also unknown to them is Kat who was a cat in human form having evolved from the cat that Lister had smuggled on board. Red Dwarf alsohad a computer called Holly who was not very bright and in llater series the Lister, Rimmer and the Kat are joined by a mechanoid called Kryton who they discover on another ship all alone.

The viewing figures for the first series were not great, fortunately it was BBC policy at the time to comission a second series straight away to see if the figures would improve hence the show returning for series 2 later that year. The BBC would keep Red Drawf until the end of series 8 when the show took a ten year gap before being take on by the digital channel Dave.
